WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VAPING AND HOOKAH USAGE?

Nov 19th 2019

There are so many options forms of smoking on the market, knowing the difference between them all can be a little difficult. Vaping is a new alternative to smoking to hit the market, and with the fast-developing terminology, phases like hookah pen and vape pen have become interchangeable, and a lot of confusion has been created in the action.

So what is a hookah? What’s the difference between hookah and vaping? And how do hookah pens come into this? Here’s a run-down of the key differences, and a look at which is the better alternative to cigarettes.

What is Hookah?

A hookah is a water pipe. A hookah consists of ahead, which is filled with flavored tobacco, a central stem leading to a water bowl at the bottom, and a hose with a mouthpiece on the end. Flavored tobacco is put in the head, and this is heated by lighting some charcoal held above it. The aim is to heat the tobacco without burning it, but this doesn’t always work out as planned. The smoke is then sucked through the water and out of the hose before the user inhales.

The form of tobacco used in hookah pipes is a bit different from normal tobacco used in cigarettes. It’s moist(wet), and often contains molasses, vegetable glycerin, and flavorings.

Some people might think that using a hookah is safer than smoking cigarettes since the water filters the smoke. That is not true. Hookah smoke contains nicotine, an addictive drug that’s toxic in high amounts. Hookah smoke also contains other chemicals that can harm the body when they are breathed deeply into your lungs. Some studies acknowledge that hookah smoking could be even more dangerous than cigarettes because people often smoke at hookah bars for an hour or more.

The Difference Between Hookah and Vaping?

If you know what vaping is using, a coil to heat the e-liquid that contains nicotine, it should be clear that there is a huge difference between vaping and hookah. In vaping, there is no tobacco present, despite the presence of nicotine or even some flavoring elements from tobacco leaves. Although hookah tobacco isn’t the same as standard tobacco, the basic fact is that it’s still tobacco. Also, even though hookah smoking isn’t really supposed to involve combustion of the tobacco, it hardly, and this is a huge difference between hookah and vaping.

Hookah VS Vape – The Similarities

Although hookah and vaping are clearly two rather different activities, they do have certain things in common:

  • Hookah and Vaping are both based on vaporization
  • Typically, they both utilize nicotine (however, most e-liquid vape offer nicotine-free options as well)
  • They both contain vegetable glycerin (VG)
  • You can experiment with flavor mixing with both Hookah and Vaping

Why are Hookah and Vaping Often Confused with Each Other?

The differences between vaping and hookah are stark and clear. Where hookah use burning coals and moist tobacco, and vape use electric coils and no tobacco whatsoever. The appearance of the two could hardly be more different: one is a tall pipe with a bowl of water in the bottom and a large hose-like mouthpiece used to inhale the smoke, and the other is either a pen-sized or boxy electronic device with a comparatively small tip for inhaling.

However, there is still some confusion between the two, and this likely stems from the similarities noted above. Since hookah tobacco comes in a variety of flavors, contains VG and gives a smooth throat hit, there are some similarities in terms of the experience of vaping and using a hookah. Both products also contain nicotine, which is another link between them.

As far as vaping is concerned, most e-liquids are a blend of the following: propylene glycol, VG, diluted liquid nicotine, and various flavor concentrates. The range of e-liquid flavors is also quite wide and similar to shisha, while you can also choose various levels of nicotine, propylene glycol, and vegetable glycerin.

If you’re new to vaping, we suggest you experiment until you find your perfect blend.

Vaping Devices Use Electricity for Heat and Hookah Uses Coals!

Hookah produces smoke by heating shisha tobacco via burning charcoal that is typically made from coconut shells. There are also average and low-level charcoals available. The former is made from wood, while the latter is made from well, you better steer clear of these, to be perfectly honest.

When it comes to the very process of burning charcoal, it can take a few attempts to get it just right. The basic “Goldilocks” rule is that you shouldn’t get it too hot (which can quite severely limit the life-span of the charcoal), and you do not want to burn it too lightly (which can lead to problems with maintaining the flame). The main equation for adjusting the heat level is, use more coal for more heat, use less coal if you need less heat.

Vaping Devices Work a Little Bit Differently:

For vape, they use atomizers to heat up e-liquid inside them. Atomizers are battery-powered components that typically have a coil that is wrapped around organic cotton. You use e-liquid to soak up the cotton part, and once the heat is applied, the liquid turns to vapor.

You don’t have to worry about heat adjustment when it comes to modern vaping devices as this process is usually done automatically. This auto-adjusting heat is measured in watts or volts and is usually done internally. You can also find unregulated vaping devices that don’t feature this automatic temperature control, but these use ohm-resistance of an atomizer coil to regulate temperature.

So there are several differences between vape pens and hookah, in terms of what they are, how they are used, why they’re used and the risks facts. The question number of people ask: which one is better to use?

As mentioned earlier, vapers are much more likely to be vaping daily in an attempt to quit smoking, while hookah users are more likely to be analyzed and smoking less regularly. In a way, your choice between the two could be seen as relating to your intentions. However, as soon as you start to think about the risks, things change a lot.

Vaping is almost safer than using a hookah. So even if you’re not intending to quit smoking, it would be better for your health if you experiment with vaping than with a hookah. The safest thing to do is avoid vaping or smoking hookah, but if you are going to do one of them, be sure you know the risks associated with both.

Hopefully, things are a bit clearer about Vape device & Hookah differences!
